Removal of contaminants
The contaminants in gases are called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and the contaminants in liquids are called Soluble Organic Compounds (SOCs). An example of VOCs are landfill gases and are the siloxanes and toxics like chlorofluorocarbons. An example of SOCs in water are impurities that impart tastes and odors, color and toxics like BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) compounds.
